Development of the subject category in the Chinese literary criticism of the 1980s

The article analyzes efforts by Chinese literary scholars to develop the most important for modernism categories of subject and subjectness. A special attention is paid to the works of Chinese scholar and critic Liu Zaifu, which summarize the essence of the two related processes in the development of post-Mao literature, i.e. to return human values to literature, and to find new subjectness.
