Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of the Russian translations of E. Bulwer-Lytton's Newgate novel «Eugene Aram» made in the second half of the XIX century. The analysis reveals different approaches in rendering Newgate novel poetics explained by the opposite purposes of translations. On the one hand, one can observe the text simplification and its adaptation for the mass readers. On the other hand, (in D.V. Averkiev’s translation) there is an attempt to convey the literary peculiarities of the foreign novel, its subject matter and poetics corresponding to the Russian literary process.
