Abstract
The paper analyzes Ivan Bunin’s short story «The River Tavern» whose main and peripheral plots can be read as historiosophic codes, and whose poetics is polemically projected onto the «modernistic» (V. Bryusov, the symbolists) and «religious-moralistic» (F. Dostoyevsky) traditions of the Russian classical literature, so profoundly reflected upon by Bunin in his late works.
