Представлены результаты аналитического обзора зарубежных публикаций двух последних десятилетий, посвященных исследованию феномена метафоры. Обозначаются наиболее актуальные исследовательские направления, демонстрирующие тенденцию к интеграции когнитивного, коммуникативно-прагматического и собственно лингвистического
подходов и методов анализа. Кратко освещается понятийно-терминологический аппарат,
представленный в зарубежных работах по теории метафоры. Обобщаются мнения американских и европейских метафорологов, в работах которых обосновывается необходимость
комплексного интегративного подхода к анализу метафорических единиц, включающего
учет их лингвистических, когнитивных и коммуникативных характеристик. Анализируются новейшие теоретические концепции метафоры (гибридные теории М. Тендаля
и Х. Штёвер), базирующиеся на интеграции положений теории концептуальной метафоры и теории релевантности.
